Ecuador, Cacao and Awki

In early 2024, before the store had shelves or even a nameplate, I boarded a plane to South America with a backpack, a notebook, and a list of chocolates I wanted to taste.

One of the countries I visited was Ecuador. I didn’t have a set itinerary, but I had done my homework—reading, researching, reaching out. I was looking for Ecuadorian makers to feature in the shop.

I managed to try a wide range of bars from across the country—some I had planned for, others I came across along the way.

That collection represents just a fraction of what’s out there. I know I still missed many.

In my research, I came across Awki, founded by Nathalia Padillia—an environmental engineer who believes in creating change through cacao.

I met with Nathalia and Assis for a full tasting of their range. They didn’t just hand me samples; they gave me context—why they source from certain region, how they work with producers, and what each bar is meant to reflect.

During the tasting, they asked if I’d be interested in visiting the farms they work with through the producers’ association they collaborate with. Of course I said yes!

So, how did it turn out? If you’ve visited our store or met us at one of our pop-ups, you’ve probably come across Awki’s Purity coins. They quickly became one of our best-selling products—and for good reason.

Awki coins gotta be some of the most amazing chocolates I’ve ever tried. So fruity and acidic!
